FREE virtual PCSS Emergency Medicine Half and Half MAT waiver training!

After registering on Eventbrite, you will receive a calendar invitation from WebEx after 1-2 business days.  With the half and half waiver training format, you will complete 4 hours of live, virtual training and then complete an additional 4 hours of online training within the next 90 days.  After completing the 4 hour virtual training, you will receive a link for the additional online training from PCSS within 3-4 business days.  Please see below for new guidelines from PCSS on joining the virtual training and more details on the half and half format!

Half-and-Half Course

The PCSS Half-and-Half Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) waiver training course provides an overview of the FDA-approved medication buprenorphine prescribed for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). The course meets the required 8-hour training to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD. The course trainer will conduct an overview of prevention, identification, and treatment of substance use disorders emphasizing OUD.

The buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training is offered in a ‘half- and-half’ format - 4 hours of in-person or virtual training followed up by 4 hours of online training through PCSS-MAT. Upon completion of the required training, providers will meet the requirement of the DATA 2000 to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid-dependent patients.

Physicians are required to complete the standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are required to complete the standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training as well as an additional 16 hours of online training as established by the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) which can be found here: https://pcssnow.org/medication-assisted-treatment/

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

• Screen and identify patients with OUD and define evidence-based treatments.

• Discuss the pharmacology of opioids as it relates to treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) patients.

• Describe the fundamentals of office-based opioid treatment including the treatment of the co-morbid patient.

• Explain the process of buprenorphine induction as well as stabilization and maintenance.

• Discuss all FDA approved antagonist and agonist medications to treat OUD.

• Discuss basic office protocols including medical record documentation and confidentially.

• Utilize evidence-based resources to ensure providers have the confidence to prescribe buprenorphine for patients with OUD.

• Recognize the importance of obtaining a waiver to begin treating patients with OUD.

The AAFP has reviewed Emergency Medicine MAT Waiver Training and deemed it acceptable for up to 4.00 Online Only, Live AAFP Elective credit. Term of Approval is from 11/04/2020 to 11/04/2020. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Online Portion Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of PAs (AAPA), American Psychological Association (APA) and Association for Social Work Boards (ASWB) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
